Castle on the Rise A Lost Castle Novel Kristy Cambron 9780718095499 Books Reviews
Kristy Cambron gets my award for Most Unpredictable Author on My Shelf. Her Hidden Masterpiece books are wonderful. The Lost Castle was pretty good. The Illusionist's Apprentice was a flop, and The Ringmaster's Wife seemed so similar to that, I didn't even try it. And Castle on the Rise, well...
Castle on the Rise won some automatic brownie points. I love castles, and I adore anything to do with Ireland. Yes, I am a loud and proud Hibernophile. I was so excited to read this book. It seemed to have everything--a mysterious castle, three romances, Irish gentry (which is unique because most stories center on the poverty or famine narrative), and Irish history. (I'm interested in The Troubles and always want to know more).
Well, Kristy Cambron tried. She valiantly tried, and I'll give her credit. The present day romance between Cormac and Laine held my attention. But everything else...every time I opened this book, I ended up falling asleep, and not because I was reading in bed. The pace moves at a crawl. Because of the three timelines, the characters undergo almost no development, and as other reviewers have said, it can be impossible to keep up.
As for the plot and events, those don't get a lot of development, either. Again, Kristy tried, and there are some engaging scenes. One occurs between Laine and Ellie at an Irish salon. There's potential for 1798 heroine Maeve, especially as she works to save some tenants on her estate from a fire. Kristy cashes in on the kid factor with Laine's little niece/daughter Cassie. But overall, I couldn't stay invested in anything. I didn't know why things were happening in the historical timelines, which is a huge turn-off. No, I don't need a lecture or a textbook, but some well-placed context would've been great. I wanted to know why the conflict over British vs. home rule started, how religion played in, etc. I wanted to see more of our couples trying to overcome it, instead of angsting. Instead, a lot of the historical events, especially the 1916 Easter Rising, seemed to come from nowhere. They're just "there." Meh.
I despise giving this book a low rating. I wanted to love it so much, and I'm disappointed on a personal level. I hope to find a similar novel that handles these issues better. *Sigh*.
Having read and loved several of Kristy Cambron's books in the past I was excited to read this one, even more so once I found it was set in Ireland aka one of my very favorite places to read about! I love time-slip novels, but to be honest I was a little nervous at first that I would find it difficult to keep up with the three different time periods, but I needn't have worried! Kristy wove them all together beautifully and there was never any confusion about which timeline I was reading.
This one gave me all the feels! I was swept away into the world of this book from the first page and hated to leave! I have come to expect a stunning, vivid, heart-touching read from this author and Castle on the Rise was no exception, this book took me on a journey and I loved every second of it! I absolutely loved all three timelines, but I think Issy's POV from 1916 might be my favorite.
This is definitely one for the keeper shelf, and I anticipate rereading it in the future! Even though it is book two in the series I feel it can absolutely stand alone, I have not read the first book but had no problem following this one. I most definitely recommend Castle on the Rise, this is one that fans of Christian historical and time-slip novels will not want to miss.
(4 Stars!)
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
The first book in the Castle series, The Lost Castle was one of my top twelve books of 2018. I've been waiting for the second book, Castle on the Rise, to release ever since.
It takes a lot of talent to write a dual timeline, but a triple timeline takes extraordinary talent and Kristy Cambron has just that. From the very first lines I was drawn in by Kristy's lyrical turn of a phrase. Her lush descriptions of scenic Ireland, her fascinating historical accounts of both the eighteenth and twentieth century, and her insightful understanding into the inner workings of relationships and painful pasts, all combine to deliver a compelling story that held me captivated until the very end. Kristy's stories are always so thought-provoking I find myself pondering them long past the last page.
Castle on the Rise is another breathtaking jewel of a journey from the inspired pen of Kristy Cambron. I'm looking forward to the third book in this series, The Painted Castle. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was really looking forward to this one...
I <3 Castles
I <3 Ireland
The story just didn't grab me here. I had a hard time following the 3 different story lines. There were characters with the same last names and just when I was following along the right people the chapter changes back to a different timeline and different people. I think I would've done better to read one story line through, skipping chapters, keeping to one timeline at a time. It didn't help that each timeline had similar events happening... so I was just all around confused. I do hope future installments check in with these modern-day characters... it would be helpful to have one constant! ;-)
Once again, Kristy Cambron whisks us off to another place in time and weaves her story to include the present... Going to Ireland is on my bucket list, and when I do, I hope to see some of the places mentioned in this book....
Another great read by Kristy. I got lost in the castle and castle ruins so much I would like to visit Ireland. Good description and three story lines. It's a clean read and Beautiful story. I hated for it to end.
