I typically do not read story books. I'm more into the information and nonfiction genre.
However, I was drawn to read this book as i stumbled upon this book. Once I read the description I knew it was going to be a type of book that I may enjoy reading.
What I most enjoyed about this book is it really makes you think about life. You see how the characters in the story are questioning what they have believed their whole lives. How the entire journey leads to very interesting decisions in their lives.
I honestly learned quite a lot about life reading this book, which I was not expecting it. It made me sit back and think about my own life.
If you enjoy stories and thought-provoking books then you will definitely get something positive out of this book.
Massive Black Hole is one of those books that make you think. The story is about three characters, Cibele, Agatha, and Amy. Each one has her own set of flaws, which make their interactions fascinating. The dichotomy of Agatha's beauty to her personality and how each character affected the other two was well done. I like how the story progressed and love the ending.
If you're looking for a good read that engages your imagination and philosophy of life, then read Massive Black Hole!!
This exceptionally well written story that has both rich descriptive language and fascinating character development. It is a deep and thought provoking read that is nevertheless fast paced and filled with unexpected twists. The characters are complex and believable. I found myself completely intrigued by the interaction between Agatha and Cibele. I could not put the book down until I found out what was going to happen to them. I highly recommend this author and will be watching for more of her work.
The action packed beginning of this novel awakens our curiosity; it entices us to continue reading and discover more about the players. It shows how the lives of 2 of the characters, now in their 40's, have become, and how they blame it all on their past; then it goes back to when they were teens and came to know each other while living in New York. Occasional exposure to science, art and music, plus a new friend with higher aspirations, challenges their belief system of good and evil leading to unexpected events. Brilliant concept, and not mainstream at all.The author deserves credit for a well-written novel and encouragement to develop her style and ideas for future works.
In this debut novel by Andrea Barbosa, what you see is not what you get. I thought this book was about black holes and space. It's not. The title refers to one of the character's conceptions of what hell must be like - a place you can never escape.
The story is about two women from different countries who come together with similar interests. Both of them are beautiful, but lack much guidance and long-range planning. They are advised by their parents to take better paths than they end up choosing, but that's about it.
Each of them ends up in New York in pursuit of modeling careers, and this is about the only thing the two have in common. Along the way, the story takes a dark and unexpected turn in regards to a third character named Amy. The first two women with the unfortunate names of Cibele (Sybil?) and Agatha often have conversations where they discuss the ultimate meaning of life. Cibele argues in favor of a theosophical view, whereas Amy, a would-be astrophysicist is more pragmatic and scientific. Ironically, it's Cibele who thinks of Hell as being like a massive black hole.
I liked the narrative and the story kept me interested although the theosophical debates were not argued very well, but then, these are not the brightest women around. And I was sad for the secondary character after an evil plot was executed against her. I didn't like the turn of events, or the ultimate outcome for Amy, which is the one that was desired by those who plotted against her. Evil kind of wins in that regard.
But then it ended with a nice, unexpected twist for the bad guys.
I give the book 3.5 stars, but rounded up since it did keep me going, and that's saying a lot after so many other debut indie books I've tried that don't succeed in that regard.
The author shows a lot of promise and having been a beta reader of her next book, I can say with certainty, she's definitely talented and getting better as she goes. I look forward to seeing more.
Massive Black Hole is a well-written, interesting story with three female leads who reveal details in separate POVs (from their teenage connection to their forty-something disconnect). Rio, Texas, and New York City serve as backdrop for Andrea Barbosa's tapestry of a novel that interweaves the lives of three women from youth to middle age. Lush descriptive writing takes you inside each location setting, and deeply felt, thoughtfully drawn characters lure you into their stories. Multiple POVs and flashbacks are two difficult writing tasks that if not done well, can easily confuse readers. I'm impressed by the author's ability to breeze through various narratives while keeping the story flowing smoothly.
I loved the unique concept and the intrigue of following these women to see where life would take them. Get ready for envy and betrayal between the once close knit three some, One life turns out well, however the others do not, thus a splendid element of surprise might make your mouth fall open.
Massive Black Hole is a thought provoking, literary work that will cause you to ponder specific areas long after you finish the read. Excellent debut novel and highly recommended for readers age 17 and up.
Fast and easy but interesting read... kept me curious to see how the story played out and I was not disappointed... thought provoking... I would definitely recommend it... great job Andrea! ) ~lcl~
